Travel Plan
Car Park Management
This can be the most controversial element of the travel plan. But to really reduce the number of cars with only one person entering the site it is essential to look at how you manage the car park.
Things to consider
- Consult with your employees – they will have many ideas for you to consider
- Develop a fair and equitable car park strategy based on a hierarchy of need (see the Travel Plan Resource Pack for Employers – available from TfW for ideas)
- Make sure you have your initiatives ('carrots') in place before implementing any planned restrictions on car parking.
- If you decide to charge for car parking ensure any revenues are used to subsidise or promote other modes of travel to work.
- Remember it costs the company to provide parking.
- See a TfW list of company examples of car park management schemes by clicking 'Car Parking Options'.
What others have done
- Restrict car parking to essential car users only
- Only allow staff to park 4 days a week.
- Pay a parking bonus that reduces each time an employee uses the car park
- Provide dedicated car share spaces near the main entrance to the builiding
