Buses carried 16.8 million passengers in 2003/04 in Cambridgeshire. Cambridge is one of the few places in the UK where bus patronage is increasing. 

Promoting Bus Travel

In promoting bus travel in your travel plan it is important to:

  • Be positive about bus travel
  • Try taking the bus to work yourself
  • Know where the nearest bus stops are
  • Know which routes serve your site and have bus timetables easily available
  • For printed timetables for your workplace please either:
    • contact the bus company a list of all operators can be view at Cambridgeshire County Council's website
  • Or
    • for 'subsidised services contact the County Council's Passenger Transport Team on (the online timetable -see 0345 045 0675 below - will tell you if the route is subsidised.)
  • Provide link to online bus timetables on company intranet

www.cambridgeshirebus.info is a new Internet bus departure time information service.  Users can access travel information easily and conveniently from their desk PC or on the move from their laptop.  Click here for more information.

You could consider offering:

  • A free breakfast to bus users once a year.
  • Loans for bus pass purchase
  • Free bus travel for the first month.
  • Longer term discounts

To facilitate this:

  • Develop a good relationship with the bus operators
  • Contact your business neighbours to see if there are any joint initiatives that you could implement
  • Take up any complaints from your staff with the bus operators
  • Ensure on-site paths and bus shelters are well maintained
  • Liase with local authority about paths from bus stops to  your site
