Cambridge Travel for Work
NewsFacts and figures for the full TfW Survey 2009In total 74 organisations took part in the 2009 Travel for Work survey, giving a potential survey population of 44,651. The organisations taking part range from large employers such as Cambridgeshire County Council, City & District Councils, Marshall Group and Addenbrooke’s who have long established travel plans, to medium and small employers just starting to develop their own travel plans. 2009 sees a total of 10,694 valid respondents up from 8,163 in 2008 – an increase of just over 31%. This is the highest number of respondents for the annual survey and amounts to a participation rate of 24%. A Generic Survey report containing the full 2009 figures can be downloaded by clicking here. However a snapshot of the results is highlighted below. The survey results for the full survey group are summarised in the following table:
Average Distance Travelled iIn 2009 the average one-way distance travelled to work by respondents who gave their home postcode was 13.12km (8.2 miles). This is down on last years average distance travelled. The following table provides a comparison for the last five years, however as the survey sample varies from year to year, direct year on year comparisons is problematic.

Commute Time Results This year respondents were asked about how long their commute to work takes on a normal day. The following are the results:
Core Group Results Each year we produce a set of results for a group of organisations that have taken part in each of the surveys. This group is known as the core group and allows year on year comparisons to be made. The results for this year’s core group along with the last six years are in the table below:
The 7 core employers are Cambridge City Council, GO-EAST (Government Office for East of England), Marshall group of Companies, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Univeristy of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire County Council and Huntingdonshire District council. One-off Surveys The annual TfW Survey takes place each October. However TfW can arrange one-off surveys for organisations at any time of year although there is a small fee for this service.

The organisations taking part range from large employers such as Cambridgeshire County Council, City & District Councils, Marshall Group and Addenbrooke’s who have long established travel plans, to medium sized and small employers just starting to develop their own Travel plans. 2008 sees a total of 8,163 respondents, up from 7,170 in 2007 – an increase of almost 14%. This is the highest ever number of respondents for the annual survey and amounts to a participation rate of just over 21%. Average Distance travelled In 2008 the average one-way distance travelled to work by respondents who gave their home postcode was 15.75km (9.68 miles). This is slightly down on last years highest average distance travelled. Table 5 provides a comparison for the last five years, however as the survey sample varies from year to year, and direct year on year comparisons is problematic.
Drive Alone The 2001 census showed that 12.6% of Cambridgeshire driving commuters drove less than 2km (1.25miles) to work. The percentage of TfW survey respondents driving less than 2km has varied over the past 5 years between 5.57% and 3.88% and does not follow any pattern.

CO2 Emissions by Mode New for 2008 is a calculation of CO2 emissions for all motorised modes of transport by employees taking part in the survey for the survey week. The calculation is based on a methodology defined by Defra (in a document entitled 2008 Guidelines to Defra’s GHG Conversion Factors).
