May 2011 - Employers get off to an Electric Start

Top employers in Huntingdon have met to see how they can work together to help their commuting staff get to work, and they also got a chance to try a brand new electric car.

In May 2011, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, the Environment Agency, Forensic Science Service and Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust attended the first meeting of the ‘Huntington Travel for Work Cluster’ which was held by Huntingdonshire District Council and the Cambridgeshire Travel for Work Partnership (TfW) to look at ways of providing commuters with healthier and greener ways of travelling to work.

“We are really excited about this initiative to bring together organisations across Huntingdon,” said John Orr, Environmental Manager for the Environment Agency “By pooling our good ideas and working together better we can all benefit from reducing non-productive travel time and costs for businesses and individuals. There are so many wins to be had here - I am sure the group will go from strength to strength.”

The Environment Agency also showed off its first electric vehicle, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, which was recently introduced to their pool car fleet. The Environment Agency is an official partner of Evalu8, the East of England’s project to install an electric vehicle charging network across the region.

Chris Jablonski, Environment Team Leader at Huntingdonshire District Council said: “We are really pleased to support local employers in developing cost effective, environmentally friendly and healthy travel options for their employees. Employer travel solutions are an important part of our overall transport strategy for the town and we look forward to working with this group and Travel for Work as we develop our new Huntingdon and Godmanchester Market Towns Transport Strategy.”

Tony Clayton, Travel Plan Adviser at the Travel for Work Partnership (TfW), based at Cambridgeshire County Council said: “TfW has been helping employers to work collaboratively to develop common commuter transport solutions for over 10 years. Our Travel for Work Cluster is an excellent forum for local employers to share information and increase travel choices for their employees. I am very pleased we are already helping four of the employers with cycling initiatives, such as bike maintenance sessions, that they plan to run during Bike Week in June.”

The Huntingdon Cluster is open to all employers in Huntingdon, who are encouraged to join the group at the next meeitng in September.  To find out more and register your interest contact Tony Clayton, at Travel for Work on 01223 728547 or email tc@tfw.org.uk.
